PRTG Administration Tool

Transcript-PRTG Administration Tool

The PRTG Administration Tool is installed automatically when you install a PRTG server. It is also installed automatically on all machines where you install remote probes. You can find the Administrator Tool in you start menu, under all programs, PRTG network monitor - PRTG Administration Tool. The tabs that you see here will differ depending on whether you're working on your PRTG core server or on a remote probe because some of the option are only relevant for a core server, while others are for all probes including both local probes and remote probes. In the first tab, the web-server tab, you can configure settings for the PRTG webserver that makes up the main user interface. First you can select whether you use https or only http on port 800443. We very strongly recommend that you do use the https. Then if you' like under expert configuration you can toggle between using SSL or not and you can specify different port if you'd like to have the webserver running on something other than 800043.

In the section select IP address you can define what IP addresses the webserver should respond to if you select local host then the PRTG webserver will only be reachable from the core server itself. If you'd like the webserver to be from other computers, then select either all IPs, in which case the webserver will respond your requests on all of the IPs the machine has or specify individual IPs to have the webserver reachable only over some of the IPs on this machine.

And in the last section on this tab you can select the language that will be use for the main user interface.

In the next tab, the core server tab, you can select what kind of remote probe connections this core server will accept. You can choose to accept the local probe only, which will prevent remote probes from connecting or you can choose to accept remote probes, either on all of the IP-addresses on this server or only on some of the IP addresses.

In the next section you specify the port that remote probes must use to connect. The default 23560 but you can change this to any port you'd like. Please note that you need to enter the same port number into the remote probe setting and if you have any firewalls between the remote probe and the core server, then you will also need to open this port, so that remote probes can connect.

The last section in this tab let you specify the directory, where PRTG will store data files and the PRTG database. In the cluster tab you can either make this core server, the master server in a cluster by clicking on create a PRTG cluster or you can join  this server to an existing cluster  by clicking on join a PRTG cluster. The administrator tab let you change the email address login, name and password for the PRTG system administrator. And the license tab shows the license you're currently using this is also where you would enter a new license after an upgrade. In the probe settings for core connection tab you can specify settings for each probe, for the local probe and for each remote probe. You can give the probe a more meaningful name and specify the reconnect time. You also can figure here the core server where this remote probe will connect. You must enter the name of the core server or IP-address and the port number where the remote probe can connect .You also need to enter here a probe access key which must be entered into the core server first. This GID is a unique identifier for this probe which you should normally leave as the default.

And in the last section on this tab you can say where PRTG should store the data for this probe. Moving on to the probe settings for monitoring you can select here which IP address PRTG will use for monitoring queries, that are send out from this probe. So for example when this probe sends out SNMP get this is the IP address that will appear as the source IP. You can select   to have the IP chosen automatically or you can choose one of the IPs available on this machine. If you're using IP V6 you can also select which IP v6 address to use for IP v6 monitoring queries.

Under the service start and stop tab you can stop or start either PRTG core server service or the PRTG probe service.

And finally under the logs and info tab, you can use the PRTG logs, you can send logs to Paessler or you can open a support ticket. If you need to open a support ticket, there is a more elegant way to do this from inside PRTG itself. In the footer, in the bottom of every PRTG page you can contact support which let you attach log files and screenshots to your support question easily.

And if I now go back to the Administration Tool for one more thing, the logs and info tab also shows you the software version is currently running on your core server, your probe and this PRTG Administration Tool.

That's it for this video about the Administration Tool. Thank you and good bye.
